Maya grew up in a family that depends on agriculture, and her father and mother work all day long to feed the family for a year. The striking plight of the harvest not being sufficient to feed themselves for 6 months hits them hard. This compels them to go earn through daily wage works such as working in a cement factory, construction PARMA system etc. Due to unproductive, un-irrigable and infertile land, subsistence agriculture results famine in her family. Despite growing in an economically struggling family, Maya is good in her studies. She performs better when she gets opportunities. She had to repeat Grade 5 at Shree Rastriya Prathimik Vidhyalaya because her family is unable to support her education after Grade 5.
